A few years ago, while discussing the role of libraries in a city like Toronto, the lack of similar spaces in Ludhiana came up. Access to books was limited to colleges or a handful of locations far from most residential communities.
The idea that a single public library will fix this problem is a misconception. Big cities need a network of them, even if they are small. It’s not just about books; these spaces provide the spark to ignite curiosity in minds. The argument that “a person who wants to learn will find a way regardless of access” should be rejected. Our goal is to reduce the resistance that many face due to external barriers or internal hesitations.
The stigma of being a “book nerd” (Parhaakuu) often brings bullying and isolation. This isn’t just a trope from American TV; I witnessed it personally growing up in Ludhiana. The resulting insecurity and ego only increase social divides and stifle empathy.
This initiative is built on the idea of Open Access, the belief that knowledge should never be gatekept. This ranges from paywalled research papers to the life-changing ideas found in expensive books. It’s about the freedom to write creatively and the opportunity to plant seeds of rationality in young minds. It is a win for humanity.
It will strengthen our community regardless of color or creed. We must reject the divisions of the past; we will no longer accept peer pressure from the dead.
This will be a space where professionals and empathetic mentors can hold lectures and seminars.Imagine exploring new careers, practicing creative writing, or preparing for the ever-changing world of technology, from robotics and art to environmental care and social justice.
Help us make this vision attainable and widespread. Please donate books or any reading materials you believe would help. Our goal is to open in three months. We have the space and a dedicated team (my family & friends) , and many have already pledged their time and books. Join us.
We are looking for donations of:
- Books: Any reading material you think would help others.
- Technology: A laptop or computer for staff and a printer for public use.
- Furniture: Tables and chairs so people have a comfortable place to study.
- Your Time: Many have already promised to help run the space; we would love for you to join them.
Help us make this vision real and reachable for everyone. If you have materials to donate or want to volunteer, please reach out!
